    Rukia 1st appeared as a mysterious person, wearing old fashioned clothes, going through walls, etc, and appeared to be a 'burgular' to Ichigo, who can see ghosts. But she sacrifices her powers to save Ichigo and his family when they are being attacked by hollows, and gives her shinigami powers to him. Without her abilities, she isn't able to return to the Soul Society and is forced to inhabit a gigai (temporary body). Rukia then attends Karakura High School as a member of Ichigo’s class.
